What Are Migraines?
If you suffer from migraines, then you already know what they are – throbbing, pulsating headaches that are so intense they can make you vomit. Light, loud sounds, and physical activity can make them worse.
Migraines can be triggered by lack of sleep, hormone levels, changes in the weather, stress and overstimulation. Sometimes trauma to the head or neck can also be a trigger for chronic migraines.
The condition tends to run in families, suggesting it is at least partially inherited. They tend to begin during puberty or young adulthood, and for some people, get better with age, diminishing after age 50 (others aren’t so lucky).
It’s thought that people who suffer migraines have a hypersensitive nervous system. This leads to overactive electrical impulses in certain areas of the brain. This can cause inflammation of cerebral blood vessels and irritation of the fifth cranial nerve, leading to the typical migraine symptoms of headache, photosensitivity, and nausea.
Conventional Treatment for Migraines
Conventional treatment involves avoiding triggers, reducing stress, and medication. There are many medications that are given to prevent or alleviate migraines. These can include over the counter medications like ibuprofen, but also anti-seizure medications, antidepressants, or blood pressure medications may be prescribed.
Many of these medications come with side effects. And people with migraines can still find themselves suffering debilitating symptoms even with medication.
But there are ways to reduce the frequency and intensity of migraines naturally, without side effects.
How Do Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine Help With Migraines?
Acupuncture involves stimulating nerve-rich areas of the skin to stimulate the production and release of natural pain killing substances (endogenous opioids), such as endorphins and enkephalins.
Acupuncture has been shown to regulate nervous system activity and reduce inflammation, treating the underlying causes of migraines.
Research demonstrates that acupuncture is extremely effective in preventing migraines. And the effects of a course of acupuncture have been shown to lead to lasting improvements in the sensitization of the nervous system to pain.
Chinese Herbal Medicine involves combinations of botanical substances that have been used for thousands of years to promote health.
Many of these combinations have been shown to reduce inflammation and exhibit brain protecting effects.
Together, these natural therapies can provide safe, effective, lasting relief from migraine pain.
