What is neuropathy?

Neuropathy is nerve damage that typically leads to pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness in the affected area. While neuropathy can occur nearly anywhere on your body, it’s most common in the hands, arms, feet, and legs.

Are there different types of neuropathy?

At Inner Alchemy Acupuncture, Dr. Baron can treat many different types of neuropathy, including:

  • Diabetic neuropathy
High blood pressure caused by untreated diabetes can lead to nerve damage, particularly in your legs and feet. Without proper care, this can cause tingling, burning, and pain in your lower limbs. In some cases, diabetic neuropathy can even lead to a loss of limbs.
  • Inflammatory polyneuropathy
Inflammatory polyneuropathy occurs when your body’s peripheral nerves — those outside of the brain and spinal cord — malfunction. This can be the result of certain cancers, infections, toxins, and even drugs.
  • Post-chemo neuropathy
Many types of chemotherapy can affect the sensory nerves in your hands and feet, even after you’ve finished treatment.

How does acupuncture treat neuropathy?

Acupuncture is a form of Chinese medicine that involves stimulating nerve-rich areas of the skin. This stimulation improves blood flow and reduces inflammation to enhance tissue repair. It also releases endorphins, which can relieve pain and discomfort associated with nerve damage.

By activating your body’s self-healing ability, Acupuncture can reduce neuropathic pain without the high risks of surgery or medication.
